E-Commerce
This website was one of the first law firm websites in New Zealand when we launched the original version in early 1997. At that time, the descriptor "E-Commerce" was not in common use. The involvement of lawyers with IT was principally as advisors to players within the IT industry. The logarithmic expansion of the internet has been paralleled by its assimilation into business-to-business and business-to-consumer transactions.
The very nature of electronic commerce is so far different from the paper based world that preceded it that many of the legal corner-stones which regulated business have become either inappropriate or irrelevant. Providing legal assistance in the frontier and constantly evolving area of E Commerce requires new skills.
At Gillespie Young Watson, we recognised at an early stage the need to embrace new paradigms and to have a thorough understanding of the structural and technical aspects of the technology and software underpinning E-Commerce. Earlier versions of this website were designed and built by our IT solicitors.
David Butler is a committee member of the Technology Law Society of New Zealand. We represent and provide advice to a wide range of clients involved in E-Commerce including hardware and software development companies, IT training, help desk providers and businesses establishing web presences.
We provide contract advice on hardware and software acquisition. We have recently acted on a substantial sale of a New Zealand hardware and software development company to a Nasdaq listed company.

We understand the technical aspects of website construction and E-business. As indicated earlier versions of this website were built from the ground up by our IT lawyers without outside assistance. We have been online since the web was in its infancy. More importantly we are able to combine that hands on knowledge and experience with our extensive legal experience advising business clients.
Our Web Consultancy Service goes beyond a traditional legal service. Its not enough to have a web presence. There are a lot of sites out there. The harsh reality is that unless you do everything right you can spend a lot of money on an attractive but ineffectual site that generates neither traffic, profile or business. Unfortunately some designers have lots of graphics and HTML skills but simply have no grasp of how the business world works. We won't build your site for you, but we can assist with independent cross over advice and an overall strategy for taking your business or professional service firm on line or improving its effectiveness.
